Markdown Slides: Turn Markdown into a Presentation

Markdown Preview turns any markdown document into a slideshow in your browser. Separate slides with ---, press Cmd/Ctrl+Alt+P, and present full screen with math, diagrams and code intact. It's free and runs in your browser, so there is nothing to sign up for or install.

Questions about markdown slides

How do I make slides from markdown?

Write your document as usual and put a line of three dashes (---) wherever one slide ends and the next begins. Leave a blank line above the dashes, because --- directly under a line of text turns that text into a heading instead. YAML frontmatter at the top is skipped, and dashes inside a code block never split a slide.

How do I start presentation mode?

Press Cmd/Ctrl+Alt+P in the editor, or open the command palette with Cmd/Ctrl+K and choose Present. Step through slides with the arrow keys, space, Page Up and Page Down, or by clicking either side of the slide. Press o for an overview grid, f for full screen, ? for every key, and Esc to go back to editing.

Can I use code blocks, math and diagrams in slides?

Yes. Slides go through the same renderer as the editor preview, so KaTeX math, Mermaid diagrams, highlighted code in 180+ languages, tables, task lists and callouts all look the same on a slide as they do in the document. Most slide tools need a plugin for each of those.

How do I add speaker notes?

Put the notes in an HTML comment that starts with notes:, like <!-- notes: remember the demo -->. The comment is taken out of the slide and shown in a notes panel that you open with s, so the audience never sees it.

Can I export my slides?

Not as a slide deck yet. Print / Save as PDF prints the whole document as flowing pages, not one slide per page. The deck itself is a plain markdown file, so you can download the .md and present it again anywhere Markdown Preview opens.

Is there a slide limit?

No. The app sets no limit on the number of slides. The deck is saved in your browser like any other document, with no account and nothing uploaded.

Write your own deck

The same document works as notes, a README and a slideshow. Everything stays in your browser, and the editor keeps a version history so you can go back to an earlier draft of your talk.
